Annual deadline September 1
by Museum of the Mountain Man
February 12, 2015

The Museum of the Mountain Man in Pinedale, Wyoming, publishes the annual Rocky Mountain Fur Trade Journal each July. This academic peer-reviewed publication serves as a venue for researchers to showcase new ideas and topics related to this era in American history.

The Museum encourages research and debate in an academic arena. Likewise, they welcome the exploration of new perspectives and innovative topics as well as defendable challenges to previously accepted theories. The peer-review process ensures quality, and thus the Journal extends the invitation to non-professional and student writers in addition to professional scholars.

Up to ten articles will be selected for inclusion in the annual issue. Each writer or writing team, if more than one writer participates in the authorship of a selected article, will receive a $1,000 honorarium. Additionally, the selected author(s) may be invited to make a public presentation when the volume is introduced to the public during the annual Green River Rendezvous Days held the second weekend in July at the Museum of the Mountain Man. Research grants of up to $1,000 are available to individuals or groups working on an article intended for publication in the Journal. Grants will be an advance on the author’s cash award for publication, and can be used for travel, materials, and services.

The Museum of the Mountain Man
The Museum of the Mountain Man is located in Pinedale, Wyoming, at the base of the Wind River Mountains and in the heart of Rocky Mountain fur trade country. The Green River Valley was a favorite location for fur trappers’ Rendezvous in the 1830s. Numerous renowned fur trade personalities passed through this area for more than three decades and accordingly many important historic events occurred in and around the area of Pinedale, Wyoming.

Opened in 1990, The Museum of the Mountain Man has gained a national reputation for its noteworthy interpretation of one of America’s legendary eras. Besides its enlightening exhibits, the museum offers educational opportunities to all ages through experiential learning programs for children, a historian in-residence program, and symposiums. At varying times throughout the summer season, visiting scholars present lectures, exhibitions, and demonstrations that explore and define the history of the mountain man and the Plains Indian culture as well as the area’s natural history and the arts. The museum collection includes a comprehensive and continuously expanding fur-trade research library currently containing more than 3,000 volumes, available to scholars for in-house research.
