Delayed opening of Forest roads and trails
Spring break-up
May 5, 2014

On April 30th, the Bridger-Teton National Forest implemented a new Special Order for the temporary closure of roads and trails. This temporary Special Order will protect the road and trail surfaces from damage during abnormally wet spring conditions. The purpose is also to protect public safety where roads are impassable due to lingering snow, landslides, or washouts.

This order encompasses all roads and trails posted as closed on National Forest System lands within the administrative and proclaimed boundaries of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

The Special Order does not allow the use of any motor vehicle on a road that is posted as closed 36 CFR 261.54 (a) and any motor vehicle on a trail that is posted as closed. 36 CFR 261.55(b)

Condition of roads and trails covered by this Order will be monitored regularly and opened as soon as conditions permit. "We are surveying the roads on a daily basis to ensure its prompt reopening to get people out enjoying the forest as soon as roads and trails are safe and drivable," said the Deputy Forest Supervisor Jose Castro. Issuing this temporary Special Order should improve road and trail conditions and the overall quality of the experience for trail and road users. Visitors are encouraged to tread lightly and use the trails in a sustainable and responsible manner to ensure a quicker reopening of the motor vehicles roads and trails for spring and summer enjoyment.

A copy of the temporary Special Order can be found at the Bridger-Teton’s Special Orders webpage. For further information please contact the Forest Supervisor’s Office at (307) 739-5500.
