23 Wyoming residents become Responsible Beverage Service Trainers
Free training for liquor servers to help curb intoxication
by Ranae Pape
February 15, 2014

In an effort to foster cooperation among prevention specialists, law enforcement and local liquor dealers, 23 people recently qualified as Training for Interventions Procedures (TIPS) trainers in Wyoming.

TIPS is a skills-based training program designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking by enhancing the fundamental "people skills" of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. The training gives individuals the knowledge and confidence they need to recognize potential alcohol-related problems.

Counties with new TIPS trainers include Johnson, Sheridan, Converse, Sublette, Natrona, Carbon, Weston, Goshen Sweetwater Big Horn, Teton and Platte.

"What I like about this program is it was developed through research from the alcohol industry - people who serve alcoholic beverages," said Ranae Pape, a community prevention specialist in Sublette County.

Benefits of TIPS-trained employees include: Protecting the bottom line by reducing penalties for alcohol violations; helping employees avoid serving alcohol to minors thus preventing underage drinking; minimizing property damage by intoxicated patrons; and possible insurance discounts of up to 10 percent to establishments that employ TIPS-trained employees.

Responsible beverage server training is offered in 22 Wyoming counties through the Prevention Management Organization of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Health. Training is free for servers, bartenders and liquor establishment owners.

To schedule a TIPS training, call Ranae Pape at (307) 360-6382.
