Refrigerator recycling program
Your old unwanted fridge can be hauled away for free
by Rocky Mountain Power
December 23, 2013

This fall, Rocky Mountain Power challenged Wyoming communities to recycle their old refrigerators in an effort to cut down on energy waste. The friendly competition, dubbed the Refrigerator Roundup, measured how many units each community could recycle during September and October. The results are in and Wyoming customers delivered. Over the course of the challenge, a combined 201 energy-guzzling fridges and freezers were taken off the grid through the See ya later, refrigerator® program.

That number is particularly impressive when you break down the full impact. Consider, the amount of energy saved by recycling 201 fridges and freezers is enough to power 94 homes for a full month. It’s also equivalent to an electric car trip of 250,659 miles. That’s a serious road trip. All told, the Refrigerator Roundup resulted in energy savings of 85,224 kilowatt-hours for Wyoming customers.

While it’s difficult to single out every city and town where customers stepped up to the challenge, a number of communities really stood out – in particular, Laramie (22 units recycled), Casper (78 units recycled) and Boulder (5 units recycled). They vary in size, but all share a common theme: each of these communities saw a notable increase in the number of units recycled compared to this same time period last year. And that is most certainly cause for applause.

Want to add your fridge or freezer to the tally? The competition may be over but the push to recycle those old energy hogs is ever present. Through Rocky Mountain Power’s See ya later, refrigerator® program, you can have that old unit hauled away for free and you’ll receive $40 just for waving goodbye. Plus, you can save up to $150 a year on your energy bill. To schedule a free pickup, call toll free 1-866-899-5539 or visit wattsmart.com. (See Ya Later, refrigerator"- earn $40)

Once your fridge or freezer is hauled away, 95 percent of the components will be recycled and repurposed into items like new appliances and computers, potting soil, asphalt, rebar and even electricity. See ya later, refrigerator® is one of many wattsmart programs available to help Rocky Mountain Power customers save energy and money.
