Game and Fish deer mortality survey May 5
by Wyoming Game & Fish
April 20, 2012

Coming off a fairly mild winter, wildlife managers with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department are not expecting significant winter mortality in the areaís mule deer herds. However, each year Game and Fish biologists try to get a better picture of such mortality by inviting the public to help them survey deer winter ranges in southwestern Wyoming. Winter ranges in the Pinedale area will be surveyed on Saturday, May 5. Those interested should plan to meet at the Pinedale Game and Fish office at 9:00 AM.

"Each winter we determine the ratio of fawns per 100 does, both at the beginning of winter and again at the end, to get a picture of winter mortality," says Pinedale Wildlife Biologist, Dean Clause. "So far, our spring surveys are showing a fawn mortality rate of about 19%, which is below the average annual mortality of 30%. Consequently, we arenít expecting to find a lot of dead deer."
