Smoke from wildfire impacting much of northern Wyoming
by National Weather Service
July 25, 2011

North-central Wyoming has again woken up to hazy skies, and the smell of smoke. This smoke is being generated by a wildfire in the southern Absaroka Mountains. The fire, named Norton Point, is located around 24 miles north of Dubois and is near the Double Cabin campgrounds. As of 5 pm on July 24th, the fire was 75 acres in size. The fire originally started in the Washakie Wilderness and has resulted in the closure of two forest service trails, the Wiggins Fork and the Bug Creek.

This fire is being considered for resource benefit. This means the fire will be allowed to remain active in order to clear out some heavy dead, down and bug killed timber within a specified perimeter. The fire will be closely monitored and will be fought if it grows outside of its permitted area, approaches structures or is deemed a risk to public health.

If additional information is needed regarding this ongoing wildfire, contact the Forest Supervisor office in Cody at 307-527-6241.
