SUBLETTE COUNTY – Jo’Lee Springman of Pinedale High School and MaryJane Schmidt of Big Piney High School earned Encana scholarships for exceptional academic achievement, active community service and commitment to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry.

Each year, Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. awards a scholarship to one graduating senior in each school district where the company operates. Jo’Lee and Mary Jane will each receive $2,500 annually, for up to four years totaling $10,000 for their college education.

Passionate about her education, Jo’Lee set high goals to attend the University of Wyoming, receive a bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering or Chemical Engineering, a minor in International Relations, and pursue a career in the energy industry in her hometown of Pinedale. She is 4-year honor roll student, member of the National Honor Society and received the Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Award three times.

Jo’Lee is not only dedicated to academics, but also to athletics and personal achievement. Her dynamic personality, keen intellect and unrelenting work ethic infiltrates every aspect of her many activities. Along with competing in varsity skiing, swimming and soccer, Jo’Lee is also proud to play tenor saxophone in Concert and Jazz bands. After all that, she still finds time to serve her community, tutoring in all subjects, beautifying the county on Cleanup Day and volunteering at the VFW.

"Community dinners at the VFW are attended by many individuals from senior generations that have the most incredible stories and history to share," said Jo’Lee. "I enjoy listening to Pinedale’s history and war stories from our country’s recognized veterans. I benefit from these individuals because everything they have to say is an opportunity to learn. I love being there to lend a hand, make them smile and most of all, show them the appreciation that they deserve."

MaryJane plans to pursue bachelor and master degrees in Mechanical/Environmental Engineering at the University of California San Diego. Her motivation to excel, paired with her dedicated work ethic has earned her numerous academic awards including Outstanding Student of the Year in various subjects, National Honor Society and Big Piney Robotics Club Think and Motivate awards. During her senior year, MaryJane was also enrolled in a number of welding classes at Western Wyoming Community College.

Not limited to just one area of study, MaryJane’s leadership skills, caring attitude and ability to work with a range of people also shine in Drama Club, as president of Student Council and Future Business Leaders of America, as "Ms. BPHS", in Junior Legislature and in the Big Piney community.

"I’ve participated in numerous eclectic extracurricular activities to broaden my horizons and prepare myself to meet any challenge I might face. Through academics and activities, I know my college experience will be balanced and prepare me for my future career," said MaryJane. "I believe knowledge is the key to the gateway of success and I’d like to thank Encana for helping me obtain my key and develop personal collegiate goals."

This year, Encana awarded six scholarships across Wyoming. The scholarship is awarded directly to the student and can be used for any college-related financial need, including tuition and fees, textbooks and rent.

"We hope these scholarships will provide many, great opportunities for Jo’Lee and MaryJane to reach their full academic potential," said Randy Teeuwen, Encana community relations advisor. "Both are exceptional students with massive determination, great academic success and positive characters, traits that exemplify Encana values. We wish you the best in your quest to great professional and personal progress."
