Rig accident kills worker
Kyle Rooke of Driggs, Idaho victim in pipe explosion

The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office and QEP Energy issued media releases on a pipe explosion on the Pinedale Anticline on Wednesday, January 5th which killed a Unit employee on a QEP drilling rig. Below are the releases.

At approximately 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5th the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office received a request for medical assistance in the area of the North Anticline/Mesa road. The reporting party stated a pipe had exploded on Unit Drilling rig 322 and that a worker had been severely burned. Life Flight out of Idaho Falls was notified and aircraft were en route for a possible transport to a burn/trauma center.

When Sublette County EMS and Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene they learned the male, identified as 42-year old Kyle Rooke of Driggs, Idaho had sustained fatal injuries in the incident. The victim received multiple injuries and died prior to the arrival of EMS. An autopsy is scheduled for later today and the incident is under investigation by the Sublette County sheriff’s Office and the Wyoming Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The Sublette county sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to the family of Mr. Rooke.

QEP Energy Company reports accident on the Pinedale Anticline

Pinedale, WY – QEP Energy Co. is saddened by an accident that occurred yesterday, January 5, 2011on Unit Drilling Rig #322, fatally injuring a Unit employee.

"QEP is deeply sorrowed by this accident. Our immediate concern is for the victim’s family and to ensure their needs are being met" said Dennis Beccue, QEP’s Pinedale Division, General Manager.

QEP and its contractors take safety seriously. Unit and OSHA will be investigating this accident in the coming days and QEP will assist however possible. Appropriate federal and local authorities were notified. The situation is under control and being managed by the appropriate parties. There were no other injuries reported.
