Pinedale regional wildlife supervisor Bernie Holz recently retired from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department after more than 27 years of service with the agency.

Holz began his Game and Fish career in 1983 in Cheyenne where he worked in the planning section. Later that year he was promoted to game warden trainee in Glenrock and in 1984 was made game warden in Torrington. In 1989 he transferred to Big Piney as game warden and in 1995 was promoted to regional supervisor for the Jackson/Pinedale district. In 2008, the district was split and Holz stayed in Pinedale as regional supervisor.

In the Jackson-Pinedale region, he has dealt with many issues including wildlife disease, habitat issues, elk feedgrounds and endangered species.

"Bernie’s most significant accomplishment has been his effort to identify and preserve big game migration corridors in western Wyoming," said chief game warden Jay Lawson. "That will surely be his most lasting legacy."

Holz has earned numerous awards including the Game Division employee of the Year in 1989 and the Director’s Award in 1977.

He is a Paxton, Nebraska native and attended the University of Wyoming, where he graduated in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management.
