No explosive material found
by Wyoming Highway Patrol
August 10, 2010

Update Tuesday, August 10, 10:49PM:

ROCK SPRINGS – Wyoming Department of Transportation and Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers have all lanes of Interstate 80 reopened to normal traffic at the Point of Rocks Interchange after a suspicious device resembling a bomb was discovered by a passerby.

The Interstate was closed for less than 1 hour while the device was removed.

The device was found attached to one of the vertical steel I-beam girders underneath the eastbound side of the Interstate near the girder’s base.

The device appeared to have tape around it and a wire hanging from it. The Sweetwater County Bomb Squad removed the device using a mechanical robot and then blasted it with high pressure water destroying it.

After the device had been destroyed an ATF Agent on scene advised that the device did not appear to have any explosive material. It is still not clear exactly what the device was or who may have put it there.

The investigation has been turned over to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and ATF.

For more information contact Sergeant Stephen Townsend, Wyoming Highway Patrol, 307-777-4306.
