LARAMIE - Wyoming high school students participating in two University of Wyoming college preparatory programs have received Daniels Fund scholarships.

The scholarships were awarded to 10 students in the GEAR UP Wyoming program and two students in the Upward Bound/Math Science Initiative Project (UB/MSIP) programs. The Daniels Fund awards scholarships to promising students with financial need who "demonstrate strength of character, a well-rounded personality and a record of accomplishment in giving back to the community."

GEAR UP and UB/MSIP are U.S. Department of Education-funded programs that assist disadvantaged middle and high school students to successfully prepare for and succeed in college.

GEAR UP scholarships were awarded to Rhiann Dameron, Douglas High School; Germany Eiden, Big Piney High School; Nathaniel Kennaday, Saratoga High School; Samuel Martin, Rock Springs High School; Marissa McKay, Cheyenne Central High School; Elio Merino, Star Valley High School; Leland Pfeifer, Hulett High School; Sierra Pope, Cokeville High School; Jesus Ramos, Douglas High School and Candace Wollert, Lingle-Fort Laramie School.
UB/MSIP students who received scholarships were Thurlo Jenkins Jr., St. Stephens Indian High School and Stepfanie Thompson, Lovell High School.

GEAR UP Wyoming is an educational assistance program that prepares income-eligible Wyoming students for success in higher education. The program is funded 50 percent through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education totaling $3.5 million annually with an additional $3.5 million provided by in-kind and scholarship contributions from Wyoming's community colleges, the University of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Education.

UW's Upward Bound/Math Science Initiative Project programs are also federally-funded, serving Wyoming high school students who are limited-income and potential first-generation college students. Services include academic, social, cultural and career enrichments that prepare students to succeed in higher education.
