Leonid Meteor Shower will light up the sky
Meteors may be seen between Nov. 13-20th

November 13, 2009

Start watching the skies for a dazzling display of the Leonid meteor shower. It is expected to peak Tuesday and Wednesday, November 17 and 18, but shooting stars may be seen any time between November 13-20th.

We received a report today of a dramatic fireball shooting across the sky around 6:30 PM, from someone driving down US 189 from Pinedale and Big Piney on Friday, saying it was bigger than anything he’d ever seen before. We’re not positive if it was part of the Leonids, but if it is a sign of what is to come from the rest of the meteor shower, it looks to be a great show.

Forecasters are predicting there could be 20 to 30 meteors per hour over the Americas during the peak. Asia is predicted to get a better show, with 200 to 300 per hour. A big plus for 2009 is the skies will be dark due to the lack of interference from the moon.

Leonids are bits of debris from a comet which visits the inner solar system every 33 years, leaving behind a stream of dusty debris in its wake, which drift across the Earth’s orbit in November.
