The Sublette County 4-H Afterschool Program received a contribution from EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. to fund its traditional and non-traditional programs that give youth an opportunity to build essential assets and life skills for a productive lifestyle.

EnCana’s $11,700 donation will furnish recreational and physical activities for the new afterschool program in Big Piney, as well as equip traditional curriculum programs like robotics kits for county and statewide contests, and non-traditional material, such as science, engineering and technology (SET), agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being.

"Our primary goal is to provide additional enrichment activities for Sublette County elementary students through this afterschool program, which offers education in necessary life skills, including SET, leadership, civics and healthy lifestyles," explained Robin Schamber, 4-H youth development specialist. "I am confident that Jennifer Anderson, the director we hired, has put together a phenomenal, well-balanced program."

The program, for K-6th grade students attending Sublette County schools, began in both towns last week. "We are extremely pleased with the program so far," said Schamber. "On the first day of school, 32 kids were registered in Pinedale and 10 in Big Piney. After the first week of school, we have already added nearly 20 kids to the program."

The 4-H program has been working with community partners to supply a healthy, multi-disciplined and safe program that supports working families, enriches academic outcomes, invokes a positive community impact and helps alleviate the county’s current need for child care stated Schamber. "We appreciate all of our partners who funded this program, and especially EnCana for their continued support of our community and youth programs over the years."

"This is a constructive afterschool program that effectively expands educational, social, emotional and physical learning time for students in a safe, supervised environment," said Randy Teeuwen, EnCana community relations advisor. "EnCana is proud to support an organization where students can build strong, positive relationships through fun and engaging activities."

According to Schamber, the number of childcare providers is limited.
