Current Condition Update

May 20, 2008

With the big Memorial Day weekend coming up, we know a lot of people are anxious to get outdoors and enjoy the spring weather.

ROADS
Most of the roads at lower elevations are dry and firm. Shady spots may still be a bit soft, especially with elevation gain. Snowline is at about 8,000 feet.

Green River Lakes road is NOT open yet (as of Tuesday, May 20). Access there is about five miles in on the gravel road. We’ve heard reports of people getting stuck trying to get in there this week. We encourage people to wait and let the road dry up before trying to go beyond the dry portions of the road so they don’t create deep ruts in the soft road surface.

New Fork Lake road is open up to the trailhead and RVs can get in. The Forest Service is working on getting water on in their campgrounds, but we’re still getting some freezing temperatures, so campers are advised to bring their own water for their needs in case the campground they pick still doesn’t have water on yet.

Roads into Fremont, Soda, Willow, Half Moon, Meadow, Burnt and Boulder Lakes are open and dry.

Big Sandy road is open to the summer homes, but still snowed in beyond that.

LAKES
The upper ends of the lakes still have a skiff of ice on them, but the lower ends are ice free for boating. Most boat ramps are dry and accessible.

GENERAL
Leaves are just beginning to come out on shrubs. Mosquitoes and biting bugs aren’t out yet. Roads into high elevation trailheads (Green River Lakes, Elkhart, Big Sandy) are still snowed in, accessible only by over-snow vehicles or skis. Temperatures have reached as high as the 80s during the day. Night-time temperatures are still chilly. Ticks should make an appearance anytime.

If anyone has current updates for additional areas, we’d appreciate an e-mail with a status report so we can pass it on, support@pinedaleonline.com.

Meadow Lake boat ramp
The gravel road into Meadow Lake is open and dry. The boat ramp at the end was still very wet, soft and muddy on Friday, May 16. There are a few dry places to park for a picnic outing, but the area is still pretty soft to risk getting an RV or camper in yet.

Meadow Lake dispersed campsite
This dispersed campsite near the boatramp at Meadow Lake is still snowed in and very wet. Photo taken Friday, May 16. Someone tried to drive in when the snow was still fairly deep and they made ruts in the road.

Windy two track
There are miles of these kinds of two-track roads that are great for mountain biking and ATV riding along the western slope of the Wind River Mountains. Be sure to check with the Pinedale Ranger District's travel map to see which roads and trails are open to 4-Wheelers.
