Local author and photographer, Cat Urbigkit, has published four non-fiction children’s picture books. Her latest book, Cattle Kids, just came out this year. She will be doing a book signing on Saturday, December 8, at the Cowboy Shop in Pinedale from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. This is the same night as the Sublette County Chamber of Commerce Mountain Man Christmas festivities and late-night holiday shopping in Pinedale.

Cat and her family are sheep and cattle producers in western Wyoming, living on a ranch not far from Big Piney. They also raise guardian dogs. Cat has worked for many years as a journalist, and is a frequent contributor to this Pinedale Online website.

“I see beauty in agricultural life every day, and want to share that beauty with children. All of my books are photographed in Sublette County, but they apply to a broader landscape of the American West as well. Cattle Kids is my newest book and features photos of different Sublette County kids involved in beef cattle production - real cowboys and cowgirls working on their family outfits. I counted the number of family ranches represented in Cattle Kids and found that over a dozen families were included in that book. It took a year to photograph and its received a great reception from the ranching community.”

Editor’s Note: Cat has won numerous awards for her coverage of agricultural and environmental issues. She has made it her priority to write factual books for children that promote positive views of agriculture in the United States. Her latest book, Cattle Kids, A Year on the Western Range, features Sublette County children who work with their families on cattle ranches in Wyoming. With colorful photos, she shows kids helping with their family’s livestock operations along a full year of ranching, from calving, to branding, riding the range, haying, the fall drift, roundup and shipping. Wyoming still has real cowboys and cowgirls, living the life and doing the real job that many only know from what they see romanticized in western movies. The kids in Cat’s book are living that lifestyle today, contributing in important ways to their family’s ranch operations. Hardback, $16.97. All four of Cat’s books will be available at the book signing. We highly recommend them! - Dawn Ballou, Editor, Pinedale Online!
