Emergency agencies recommend storing a two-week supply of water for each family member for emergency purposes.

Teach children to regularly wash their hands with soap and water.

Make sure you have a supply of prescription, and non-prescription drugs (pain relievers, cold medicine, fluids with electrolytes, stomach cramp medicine) on hand.

During a severe emergency, stores may not be open or may run out of essential supplies. These supplies can be useful in other types of emergencies, such as power outages or short-term disasters.

In a pandemic flu situation, the crisis will likely come in waves and could last for up to a year.

Week 3 Emergency Supply Shopping List
Preparing Sublette County for the next Emergency

WEEK 3:
Grocery Store:

1 Gallon of water for each family member and pet
1 Can meat for each family member
1 Can fruit for each family member
Sanitary napkins
Video tape
If Needed: Pet food, diapers, baby food
TO DO:
1. Use a video camera to tape the contents of your home for insurance purposes
2. Store video tape with a friend or family member who lives out of town.

This is the Week 3 shopping list for our “Preparing Sublette County for the next Emergency” effort in cooperation with Sublette County Health.

When you’re back in the grocery store, pick up more drinking water for all your family members, plus extra for the family pet. Then grab a can of meat and fruit for each family member.

This suggested shopping list is a starting point of quick and easy things to inexpensively pick up while you’re out doing your usual shopping needs. Feel free to expand upon it if your budget allows and modify the list to meet the specific needs of your family.

When you head down the “personal items” aisle, pick up whatever items might be needed for your family’s sanitary needs. Our list suggests sanitary napkins, but maybe it’s adult diapers or something else specific to members of your family. If you want to expand the list, consider Kleenex tissues, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, tooth ache medicine, dental floss, diaper rash ointment, first aid items, or any other item your budget can afford and you think will be invaluable should you have to be self-sufficient for an extended period of time.

Our list also has us video recording the contents of our home for insurance purposes. An extension of this is to check batteries in smoke alarms, make sure fire extinguishers are available and working, and important documents are safe (some of this will come up again later in our short list).

This info is gleaned from a “Family Disaster Supply Calendar” brochure available from the Sublette County Public Health. They are located at 619 E Hennick Street (same building as the Pinedale Medical Clinic, west entrance).
