National Visitor Use Surveys-Bridger-Teton National Forest
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
October 4, 2007

National Forest Surveys will soon be taking place across the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Forest Service and contract employees will be working in developed and dispersed recreation sites along Forest Service roads. The on-going national forest surveys have already been conducted once on every National Forest in the country. We are now returning five years later to update the information previously gathered as well as to look at recreation trends over time. The information is useful for forest planning and even local community tourism planning.

This recreation visitor program gathers basic visitor information. Trained interviewers will wear bright orange vests and may be out in all kinds of weather waiting to know about your visit to the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The basic interview lasts about eight minutes and every other visitor is asked a few additional questions which may take an additional five minutes. Some questions include: where the visitor recreated while on the Forest, how many people they traveled with, how long they were on the forest and how satisfied they were with the facilities and services provided. These interviews are entirely voluntary. It is important that local people using the Forest are also interviewed so feel free to pull up to answer a few questions.

Information collected in this national study will be used in local Forest planning, at the state planning level and even by Congress. The more that we know about our visitors the better managers can provide for visitor needs. If you would have questions about this program you can visit our website at http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/programs/nvum or call the Bridger-Teton National Forest at (307) 739-5500.
