September 18, 2007: Moondance Diner: Rediscovering The Past (through its floor!)
“Hack’s Construction in LaBarge began to take up the flooring on the Moondance Diner. Each layer, (there are about 5 at last count) is telling of some time in the Diner’s history. With video camera in tow, I went to visit Moondance this afternoon. Rowdy, a crew member of Hack’s Construction, was well up to his knees in decades of flooring material. Each layer is symbolic of the Diner’s historic value…. a much more extensive value than what one might see from the appearance of it’s exterior. Imagine the people who tracked on the 1st layer…. maybe in the early 30’s…. it appears to be small tiles( possibly the kind that is installed in sheets?). What about the 2nd and 3rd layers? Classic movie starlets or perhaps a Yankee or two graced the floors of the Moondance in search of brief anonymity and comfort food? What about a mysterious figure sneaking in out of the rain? His tracks revealing more about the weather outside than his identity? A Mob Boss, perhaps? The top couple of layers are more familiar. We see part of the Alan Bushbaum interior, the harlequin-style pattern that was center stage in the 1983 photo of Moondance in “The Mechanics of Taste” edited by Frederic Schwartz. Of course there is the tile my husband and I saw when we visited the Diner after its closing in July 2007. Maybe Peter Parker & Mary Jane would recognize this top layer as well. Coins, drumsticks, silverware….. small trinkets that reveal a human element to the Moondance structure. I will be anxiously awaiting more discoveries during this renovation and will gladly share them.” - Cheryl Pierce- Caretaker of the Moondance Diner
