Elk feedground permitting examined
by U.S. Forest Service
August 5, 2007

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is proposing to authorize use and occupancy of national forest sytem land for the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission to maintain facilities and use forest land in conjunction with its winter elk management programs.

Two actions are planned:

1. a temporary special use authorization for winter 2007 to spring 2008 for portions of the Jackson and Pinedale Ranger districts at the following four locations: Fish Creek, Pritchard (Dog) Creek, Muddy Canyon (Muddy Creek), and Fall Creek, and

2. a 20-year-term permit for portions of the Jackson and Pinedale Ranger Districts at the following seven locations: Fish Creek, Pritchard (Dog) Creek, Muddy Canyon (Muddy Creek), Fall Creek, Alkali Creek, Upper Green River, and Patrol Cabin.

The public now has an opportunity to comment and identify concerns, issues or recommendations on these proposed actions. Comments should provide specific rationale and opinions to assist the Forest Service in shaping the environmental analysis.

Environmental analysis for Action #1 has been determined to fall within a category of actions that may be categorically excluded from documentation in an Environmental Analysis (EA) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Forest Service Handbook 1909.15, section 31.12, paragraph 8, allows: “Approval, modification, or continuation of a minor, short-term (one-year or less) special use on National Forest Service lands.” Comments concerning this action must be postmarked by August 14, 2007.

Environmental analysis for Action #2 will be documented in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). A notice of intent to file an EIS is expected to be posted in the Federal Register in early August. Comments concerning this action must be postmarked by September 17, 2007.
