Horse Creek Fire activity slows
Fire at 700 acres, 200 people on blaze west of Daniel
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
June 22, 2007

(Big Piney) – Friday, June 22 Update: The Horse Creek Fire on the Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest put up a lot of smoke this afternoon, but has not been extremely active. The fire has only grown to 700 acres and is being suppressed by about 200 fire personnel. The fire also has 2 helicopters working on it as of this afternoon (4:30 PM Friday). There are no structures threatened and no trail closures as a result of this fire. The fire danger for the Bridger-Teton is listed as moderate.

Helicopters were used in wildland fire suppression activities as early as 1947. Helicopters can be outfitted with a bucket or fixed tank to drop water or retardant during firefighting operations. They also can be used to deliver firefighters to the fire line for initial attack on the blaze, and used to transport personnel and cargo in support of fires. Today, some helicopters can also carry equipment to produce infrared imaging or digital maps of wildland fires for fire officials to use while monitoring the fire.
