National Tourism Week in Wyoming
May 12-20, 2007
by Sublette County Joint Tourism Promotion Board
May 3, 2007

(Pinedale) - Governor Dave Freudenthal signed a proclamation during the 2007 Governor’s Conference on Hospitality and Tourism, April 16, 2007, at the Parkway Plaza & Conference Center in Casper. He designated May 12-20, as National Tourism Week in Wyoming. The governor is authorizing and requesting that communities across Wyoming observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities in recognition of tourism as Wyoming’s second largest industry. This year’s theme is “Tourism: Wyoming’s Front Door.”

According to Mindi Crabb, Marketing Director for the Sublette County Tourism Board, “National Tourism Week is a time for communities to recognize the positive impacts of travel and tourism.” Crabb continued, “This is the time to thank our visitors for their patronage, honor the employees who serve them, and show pride in our industry. Dollars spent by visitors have strengthened Wyoming’s economy by creating jobs, supporting local businesses from gas stations to retail stores and creating greater tax revenue to support the community.”

Tourism contributes $2.2 billion annually to Wyoming’s economy from approximately 6.9 million travelers. The travel industry also provides 28,620 jobs in Wyoming generating an annual payroll of $559 million. In Sublette County tourism contributes $41.5 million annually to the economy and provides 570 jobs. In 2005 it brought in over $500,000 in local taxes.

“Economic diversification is critical to maintaining healthy communities and Sublette County’s natural resources and beauty have always attracted visitors. It is important that we continue to promote our area attractions and events for the long-term benefit of our local businesses and our tax base”, Crabb stated. “We are very appreciative that the Sublette County Commissioners recognized the importance of tourism and funded the new Visitor Center.” The new building, which is due to open in June, will provide a beautiful new home for the Sublette County Chamber of Commerce and will attract visitors to come in and see all that the county has to offer.
