Yellowstone Park season closures
Winter season begins Dec. 20
October 9, 2006

Roads in Yellowstone National Park have begun to close for the season.

The temporary visitor center at Old Faithful will close at 5 pm on November 5. While the Albright Visitor Center in Mammoth Hot Springs is open all year, it will be closed for Veterans Day on Saturday, November 11, and on Thanksgiving Day, November 23.

Most of the general stores have closed for the season. The store at Old Faithful closes October 15. The store in Mammoth Hot Springs remains open all year.

The Old Faithful Snow Lodge will close Sunday, October 22. Lodging facilities at Grant Village and Canyon have already closed for the season.

Campers also have increasingly limited options as the season draws to an end. Madison Campground closes October 29; Slough Creek Campground closes on Halloween, and Lewis Lake Campground closes November 5. The campground at Mammoth Hot Springs is open year-round.

Visitors also need to keep an eye on the gas gauge. The service station at Mammoth Hot Springs closes after this weekend. Gasoline will remain available at Canyon and Old Faithful, but only by credit card service at the pump after October 15. Fishing Bridge has already closed but also has credit card service at the pump available.

The road between Tower Fall and Canyon (Dunraven Pass), and the Beartooth Highway from Long Lake to the summit at the Montana/Wyoming state line will close at 8 am on Tuesday, October 10. All interior park roads close in preparation for the winter season at 8 am on Monday, November 6. Weather conditions could temporarily close some roads at any time. Information on park road conditions is available 24 hours a day by calling the park’s road information hotline at 307-344-2117.

Park roads are scheduled to reopen to oversnow vehicle use on Wednesday, December 20, if there is enough snow to allow for safe travel. Information on visiting the park in winter is available online at http://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/winteract.htm.
