Storm brings snow to mountains
Up to 8 inches reported in high mountains
May 28, 2006

A late spring storm brought snow to the higher elevations of northwest Wyoming Saturday night, with more snow and rain possible Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

Automated SNOTEL sites indicated that snowfall varied considerably across the northwest mountains. Most of the heavier snow fell above 9,000 to 10,000 feet. Togwotee Pass in Teton County reported 8 inches of new snow and Two Ocean Plateau SNOTEL in Yellowstone National Park reported 6 inches of new snow.

SNOTELS at Triple Peak and Blind Bull in the Wyoming Range, and Gunsite Pass in the Upper Green, are not giving accurate readings to report any new snow depth. White Pine Ski Area top webcam showed just a skiff of new snow by 6 am Sunday morning. South Pass SNOTEL reported .2 inches of snow Sunday morning.

The storm is expected to continue to move northeast into western Monday and southern Canada Sunday, with another system moving into western Wyoming. .More snowfall is expected Sunday in northwest mountains of Wyoming Sunday afternoon. Snow levels will drop in elevation and be at the valley floor at times. New snowfall of 2-4 inches is possible above 8,000 to 9,000 feet by Sunday evening.

A few thunderstorms are also possible, with the danger of cloud to ground lightning and small hail. Daytime temperatures are expected to be in the 40s to mid-50s in western Wyoming on Sunday, with showers and thunderstorms a possibility through the rest of Memorial Day weekend and into Tuesday. Breezy conditions are also possible, with wind gusts as high as 30 miles per hour.

Winter-like conditions will leave the area for the rest of the week with temperatures getting back into the 60s and high 70s by mid-week. Expect clear and calm conditions in the early part of the days, with clouds building up by mid-day and the possibility of thunderstorms and showers in the afternoons. Night-time lows are expected to be in the 30s-40s.
