Last weekend the Pinedale HS age hockey team traveled to Salmon, Idaho to play in a six-team invitational hockey tournament. Other teams participating were Ogden Utah, Sun Valley Idaho, Salmon Idaho, Spokane Washington and Missoula Montana. During pool play they had to play Sun Valley, Missoula and host, Salmon.

They opened up Friday night with an exciting game against Sun Valley. Pinedale opened the scoring only 30 seconds into the game on a goal by Jeremy Silvey assisted by Jake Hunt. Then Sun Valley scored two goals in the second period to go up by one goal until really late in the game. With two minutes to go in the game, Pinedale’s Nate Olsen was called for a penalty putting the Glaciers down by one man for the rest of the game. Pinedale took a timeout and pulled their goalie. Sun Valley kept icing the puck trying to score on the open net but just kept managing to miss the goal and getting the face off back into their defending zone. They did that one to many times and Drew Guenthner assisted by Jeremy Silvey pushed the puck in the net with only 2 seconds left to go in the game to end the game in a tie. Chris Manning, Pinedale’s goalie made 12 saves on 14 shots while Pinedale managed 15 shots on the Sun Valley goalie.

Saturday morning saw a very shorthanded Pinedale team facing a big strong Missoula team. Pinedale had only 7 skaters and a goalie for this game because of injury and a penalty. Besides the Salmon Bantams who played with Pinedale this weekend had 2 games later that day and couldn’t play for Pinedale. Missoula beat Pinedale 9-1 with Chris Manning having to face 37 shots in the game. Drew Guenthner managed to break up a shutout by scoring a breakaway goal early in the third period.

14 hours later Pinedale was back on the ice for Salmon’s senior night festivities. Pinedale was ready to skate against the highly favored Salmon team. Pinedale was back at full strength with 8 forward skaters, 4 defense and a goalie. They skated hard and fast, beat everyone to the puck, passed with precision and goalie Manning stopped everything put on him. After two periods the score was 0-0. Salmon broke the ice with a goal in the third period but Pinedale’s Drew Guenthner tied it up. Salmon scored another goal and it looked like they were going to have a successful senior night when Luke Nicks scored a goal to tie the game up with only 1 minute to go. The game ended in a 2-2 tie and Pinedale foiled their senior night celebrations. Chris Manning in goal made 12 saves on 14 shots while Pinedale outshot them with 21 shots. This put Pinedale in the early Sunday morning game against Sun Valley for 3rd place.

Sunday morning came bright an early with an 8AM game after finishing last night’s game at midnight. Pinedale was ready to play, but Sun Valley scored on a wrap around early in the game. Pinedale reciprocated with two goals in the first by Drew Guenthner and Preston Schwab. Schwab was assisted by Guenthner. Sun Valley then tied it up going into the second period 2-2. Pinedale’s Guenthner scored early for the game winning goal and Shane Underwood scored an insurance goal assisted by Luke Nicks to end the scoring. Pinedale won 4-2. Chris Manning got the win by making 21 saves on 23 shots.

Playing for Pinedale this weekend were goalie Chris Manning, centers Jake Hunt and Drew Guenthner, forwards Nate Olsen, Preston Schwab, Wes Schwab, Shane Underwood, Jeremy Silvey, Garrett Stahl, Luke Nicks, Brian Berasi, defense Joe Pearce, Tra Harkrader, John Colton and Shawn Sabo. They were coached by TJ Hunt and Craig Sheppard.

Their next games will be the state playoffs here in Pinedale the weekend of Feb. 24-26.
