Public meetings on grizzly bear delisting
E-mail comments accepted through Feb. 15
January 3, 2006

The U.S Fish & Wildlife Service will be holding several public meetings this month in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho to get public comment on plans to remove federal protection for grizzly bears in areas surrounding Yellowstone National Park. With delisting of the bears from the Endangered Species List, bear management would be in the hands of the three states rather than the federal government.

Public meetings are scheduled for:
Jan. 9: Bozeman, Montana, Holiday Inn
Jan. 10: Cody, Wyoming
Jan. 11: Jackson, Wyoming
Jan. 12: Idaho Falls, Idaho

Public comment will be accepted by mail and e-mail until February 15 at: FW6_grizzly_yellowstone@fws.gov.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service proposed removal of grizzly bears from the Endangered Species List last November, citing thriving population increases above threshold numbers. It is estimated that more than 600 grizzlies now live in the Yellowstone area. The bear was originally listed and put under federal protection in 1975.
