A Day of Sledding
A Day of Sledding Several families braved the cold temperature (between 9 and 12 degrees) and went sledding in Merna Saturday. There are many great hills to sled on in Sublette County. All you need is a sled and a strong pair of legs to get back up the hill. Pictured here, Jorja Warembourg, Emma McCulloch and Allison Gregory prefer to ride three to a sled. Wyoming in the Winter
Wyoming in the Winter Dave Bell got out and enjoyed the splendor of winter in Sublette County over the weekend. "Saturday, January 3, 2009 was one of those terrific winter days--brilliant sky, very brisk temperatures and terrific scenery and sights at every turn. We spent the day shooting--and shooting--and shooting." Pictured here, a snowfence does its job of slowing the windspeed and causing the snow to drop to the ground to minimize drifting across the road. Sublette County sees -10 to -40 below zero temperatures
Mother Nature wasted no time getting serious about serving up real Wyoming winter to start the New Year. Temperatures plummeted over the weekend as a high pressure system settled in over Wyoming on Saturday. This, coupled with light winds, allowed temperatures to fall well below zero overnight. Below are preliminary low temperatures for Sunday morning for western Wyoming, according to the National Weather Service out of Riverton. Unofficial reports from Bondurant had their low at -40 early Sunday morning.

United Way launches website (posted 1/3/09)
Supports health and human service organizations in Lincoln, Sublette, Sweetwater and Uinta counties
Suzanne Zutter, director of the United Way of Southwest Wyoming, announced Monday that the organization has launched a redesigned website, www.swunitedway.org.

"We believe this website will be a valuable resource that provides our latest news and event information, as well as being a tool for our donors and volunteers," said Zutter.

The website is now able to accept online donations and is populated with pages including Give, Advocate, Volunteer, About Us, Get Help, Events, Campaign Center, Focus Areas, Partners and News. Many pages have sub-pages with additional information or links to other sites. The site allows users to sign-up for the electronic United Way newsletter.

"As our community and organization grows, having a quality website is crucial in getting our message out and staying in touch with community members, also giving them a place to provide feedback. We will be adding additional pages as needed and growing the website over time," said Kelly Frink, director of marketing and communications.

United Way of Southwest Wyoming supports health and human service organizations in Lincoln, Sublette, Sweetwater and Uinta counties. For more information on United Way and its community partners visit the website or contact Zutter at director@swunitedway.org.

Checking back in on the Family on Bikes (posted 1/1/09)
Nancy and John Vogel and their 10-year old twin sons Davy and Daryl
Dawn Ballou, Pinedale Online!
Last October, we met the Vogel family when they passed through Pinedale on their two-1/2 year, 20,000-mile bicycle trek from Alaska to the southern tip of South America. Nancy and John, and their ten-year old twin sons, Davy and Daryl, began their trip in Boise, Idaho in June, 2008. They arrived in Pinedale on October 9th, just ahead of an early season snow storm threatening to drop three to ten inches of snow in the Upper Green River Valley. The family stayed at High Country Suites in Pinedale for several days to let the storm pass and more favorable weather to arrive. Click on the links at the end of this article to read more about their weekend stay in Pinedale.

After they left us, the family headed to Utah and then to New Mexico. They spent Thanksgiving in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. From there, they headed to Texas, where they were for Christmas.

The family is traveling with two single bikes and a tandem, which allows the boys to switch back and forth between the single and tandem. Once they arrive in Argentina at the end of their journey, Davy and Daryl will become the new Guinness World Record holders as the youngest people to cycle the Pan-American Highway. Below are their riding stats as of the end of November. To read more about this family’s adventure, visit their website: www.familyonbikes.org .

Increased earthquake activity in Yellowstone National Park (posted 12/31/08)
Tremors up to 3.9 magnitude recorded over past several days
There have been a series of more frequent small earthquakes in Yellowstone National Park over the past several weeks, causing scientists to watch the activity more closely. There have been more than 250 tremors in the 2.5-3.9 range. A magnitude 3.9 tremor occurred on Sunday, December 28th. Although tremors are common in the Yellowstone National Park area, the increased activity is more frequent than usual.

Although there is no way to know the significance of the increased activity, the Yellowstone area is an active geothermal site. The last major eruption of the Yellowstone volcano was 700,000 years ago. The area experiences frequent minor tremors, most of which go unfelt except by measuring equipment.

Below are tremors the USGS has listed on their earthquake website that have been recorded in Yellowstone National Park for the past several days. Click on the links at the end of this article for related stories and more earthquake information.

Legislature to begin Jan. 13, 2009 (posted 12/29/08)
Cat Urbigkit, Pinedale Online!
The 60th session of the Wyoming Legislature is slated to begin Jan. 13, 2009 for its general session.

There are numerous bills that have been pre-filed by legislative committees and individual legislators. For a complete list of pre-filed bills, click on the link at the bottom of this page.

Here's a few items of interest:

Two wolf management bills have been pre-filed in the House. House Bill 21 would designate wolves as trophy game animals statewide and is sponsored by Representative Gingery of Jackson. HB 32 is sponsored by the legislature's Joint Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Interim Committee. It calls for Wyoming to ensure there are at least 15 breeding pairs of gray wolves in the state and to ensure genetic diversity and connectivity with adjoining populations.

Senate File 008 provides for the identification and destruction of feral livestock.

SF 013 would allow the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to regulate and control the collection of naturally shed antlers and horns of big game animals.

SF016 would declare the Sheridan's green hairstreak butterfly the state insect.

SF010 and SF031 would expand Wyoming's brucellosis program to include not only testing of cattle, but spaying of heifers. SF10 would have the program apply only within a designated surveillance area, while SF031 would apply statewide.

SF036 would prohibit the intentional feeding of elk. It reads: "No person shall intentionally attract or feed any elk by depositing, placing, distributing or scattering feed that results in commingling with livestock.
(b) Nothing in this section shall prohibit:
(i) Any normal or accepted agricultural management practice;
(ii) Any elk feeding program authorized or conducted by the department;
(iii) Any legal form of taking elk as provided in W.S. 23-1-705(j) or baiting
elk as authorized by commission rule and regulation;
(iv) Any feeding of elk for the purpose of reducing the opportunity for contact with livestock when undertaken with prior notice to the department;
(v) Any feeding of elk outside the designated elk surveillance area.
